She Can Digital: Empowering Nepal’s Young Women Through Technology

As Nepal’s digital landscape evolves, access to technology is essential for education, employment, and opportunity. Yet, many young women from low-income and marginalized backgrounds continue to face barriers.

The She Can Digital Project, led by RUWON Nepal in partnership with Women’s Worldwide Web (W4), addresses this gap by equipping young women with digital skills, confidence, and pathways to economic empowerment.

Bridging the Digital Gender Divide in Nepal

Despite advances in education and connectivity, structural inequalities continue to limit women’s and girls’ participation in the digital economy. Poverty, social barriers, and limited training opportunities remain significant challenges.

RUWON Nepal launched She Can Digital to provide free, practical digital literacy training for young women with limited or no access to technology education.

The program develops job-relevant skills, including computer fundamentals, Microsoft Office, internet and email communication, online collaboration tools, digital safety, and workplace readiness. It also emphasizes leadership, communication, confidence, and critical thinking, all essential for today’s workforce.

Through community-based training centers in Kapan and Kalanki, Kathmandu, the initiative provides access to computers, internet, mentorship, and a safe, supportive learning environment.

She Can Digital – Kapan Training Center

Launched in September 2018 in Budhanilakantha Municipality, the Kapan Training Center is the foundation of She Can Digital. Established by RUWON Nepal and W4, the center empowers young women through structured digital literacy and life skills training.

Over the years, the center has become a reliable learning hub, offering training in computer basics, Microsoft Office, internet and email use, digital communication tools, online collaboration, digital safety, and workplace readiness. Participants also receive mentoring, leadership development, confidence-building, and career guidance. The center quickly adapted to remote learning during lockdowns, ensuring uninterrupted access to digital education.

From 2018 to June 2026, the Kapan center conducted 14 training cohorts and trained over 425 young women and girls. Many graduates have gone on to higher education, employment, or entrepreneurship.

She Can Digital – Kalanki Training Center

To expand its reach, RUWON Nepal opened a second training center in July 2025 in Bafal, Kalanki, Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward No. 13. Supported by Fixers TV (USA) and the Paint the Globe Foundation, the center offers a dedicated digital learning space for women and girls.

After its establishment, Women’s Worldwide Web (W4) supported operations, enhancing training delivery and mentorship.

The Kalanki center provides foundational and intermediate digital literacy training, including computer skills, Microsoft Office, internet communication, online collaboration, digital safety, and workplace readiness. Participants also receive mentoring, leadership development, confidence-building, and career guidance.

Since its launch, the center has become a key digital empowerment hub. By June 2026, it conducted three training cohorts and trained over 84 young women and girls, expanding digital education for underserved communities. The success of She Can Digital has been strengthened by its collaboration with Women’s Worldwide Web (W4), a France-based nonprofit working globally to empower women and girls through education and digital inclusion.

Through this partnership, W4 has provided mentoring, learning resources, and international engagement. This collaboration has helped RUWON Nepal improve program quality, expand its reach, and connect participants with global mentorship networks.

Opening Pathways to Opportunity

In today’s economy, digital literacy is a gateway to opportunity. For many participants, She Can Digital offers their first experience with computers and technology, opening doors to education, employment, entrepreneurship, and remote work.

The program’s impact extends beyond individuals to families and communities. Many graduates share their skills, support children’s education, and contribute to household income, fostering broader empowerment.

A Growing Movement for Inclusion

Since 2007, RUWON Nepal has promoted education, empowerment, and social inclusion for marginalized women and girls. Its Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) reflects its commitment to advancing gender equality at the national and international levels.

With over 509 young women and girls trained across two centers, She Can Digital is an emerging model of community-driven digital empowerment in Nepal.

As Nepal advances digitally, initiatives like She Can Digital help ensure young women are equipped to lead, innovate, and participate fully in the digital future.

The program’s message is simple yet powerful: when women gain access to technology, they gain opportunity and the ability to transform their lives and communities.
