Kathmandu, Nepal – A recent school-level debate competition aimed at promoting critical thinking, public speaking, and civic engagement brought together students from multiple schools, providing a platform to discuss contemporary issues and exchange ideas.

The event, organized by local educators and youth development advocates, tasked these organizers with selecting topics, forming teams, and handling logistics.

Judges were responsible for evaluating debates and providing feedback. Teams of students debated topics including artificial intelligence, climate change, social media, education reform, and youth participation in democracy. Participants were expected to present evidence-based arguments, challenge assumptions, and engage respectfully with opposing viewpoints.

Organizers stated that the primary objective of the competition was not only to determine winners but also to cultivate essential life skills that help students navigate an increasingly complex, information-rich world. “We want students to learn how to think critically, communicate effectively, and evaluate information before forming opinions,” said one of the event coordinators.

Throughout the competition, students were responsible for researching their assigned topics, preparing arguments, and delivering their points with confidence and analytical thinking. Judges evaluated participants based on the strength of their arguments, use of evidence, presentation skills, and ability to respond thoughtfully to counterarguments.

Teachers attending the event also emphasized that debate competitions provide valuable opportunities for students to develop leadership qualities and gain confidence in expressing their views publicly.

“Many students are hesitant to speak in front of large audiences,” said a participating teacher. “Debate helps them overcome that fear while teaching them how to structure arguments logically and respectfully.”

Educational experts recognize debate as an effective way to build essential skills. In an era marked by abundant information and misinformation, the ability to analyze sources, evaluate evidence, and engage in informed discussion is vital.

Students who participated reported that the event challenged them to examine issues from multiple perspectives and deepened their understanding.

One student participant said that debating was not about proving someone wrong, but about understanding different viewpoints and supporting ideas with facts.

The competition also emphasized the importance of collaboration and teamwork, as participants worked closely with teammates to research topics, prepare arguments, and develop strategies for addressing opposing positions.

Organizers plan to expand similar initiatives in the future and will be responsible for coordinating schools and structuring debate activities in upcoming programs.

They encourage more schools to adopt debate activities and take responsibility for integrating these opportunities into their educational programs, aiming to nurture informed, confident, and responsible citizens.

As schools continue to prepare students for the challenges of the twenty-first century, debate competitions serve as powerful means of fostering communication skills, creativity, and civic awareness.

For many participants, the event served as a reminder that education involves not only acquiring knowledge but also learning how to think, question, and engage meaningfully with the world.
